Olympia

Sungenre
Here’s five tracks as chosen by Australian art pop singer-songwriter Olympia, ahead of the publication of our extended interview.

The feeling that’s in all of these five songs is – there’s just this expression when I listen to all of them. Even though they’re completely different, they make me feel like I could do anything, you know? I could rob a bank, I could run a race and become number one, you know, I’m very buff and muscly. They just transport me to somewhere else. And I guess that means they’re tapping into this visceral feeling, instead of it being, you know, about thinking, observations. And I just absolutely love that.

The K-Flay song, “Blood In The Cut”, that is an incredible expression. You know, like, I want to hurt so much I want to see the evidence of it, I want to see blood in cut. And the first time I heard that song, I think it may have been on Song Exploder or a podcast, and the first time I heard it I was a little bit, um, caught on some of the lyrics. Because they’re so immediate it just sounds like someone who’s going through a breakup, and they’re just spitting the first thing that comes to their mind. However, the more I listened to it, that’s what I love and I think – I know for me, there’s a lot of revision, you know, in your work and you’re constantly thinking, “Ah, I could have chosen a better word for that.” But I love how this is just, like, throw mud at the wall and see where it sticks. Which is totally under-selling the song, because it’s actually produced amazingly. So I’m a big fan of that.

Eddy Current Suppression Ring – Colour Television
This song brings me so much joy and I just think, I hope we never ever hear the end of this band. And I know that they’re broken up, and you don’t hear from them very much anymore, however a lot of the new bands that are coming up sound so much like them. Their legacy lives on. And when I was in England, there were so many bands who were very honest and upfront about how much they were trying to step into the shoes of Eddy Current. And in England there’s just this very exciting burgeoning band scene, because it has been dominated by electronic music. So when I was there, people were so excited to talk about King Gizzard, Eddy Current, Total Control, and that was really awesome. Because any chance to talk about musicality, I’m in.

Peep Tempel – Carol
I love this band so much and they are another band that reckon they’ve broken up. I hope that is not true. “Carol” is – I mean, look, I feel like there’s no point explaining the song, the lyrics are all there. Reach out and grab them with your own hands. I love that song.

Tame Impala – List Of People (To Try And Forget About)
I’ve actually come about this song when I was trying to, introduce “Shoot To Forget”, my new single. And I was thinking, “How can I explain to other artists what the song’s about?” And part of it is, you know, like how some people choose to forget their past in order to move forward. Because there’s this real burden of memory. You know, you can think, “Oh wow, I don’t know what I was thinking, I would never have done that.” Because you do evolve and sometimes it takes bad decisions to help you evolve. And this Tame Impala song, you know, “List of People (To Try And Forget About)”, well it’s all there in the title. But this is a great track and I like – that’s a heavy idea, I think, to explore, and I love that they’ve done it with me.

Ty Segall – Caesar
I would love to cover this song. I just love how he’s singing it. I imagine like, Sesame Street and muppets, how their head flips back, because it’s like this guttural singing and it’s just smashing with his heart and smashing his vocals and it’s all about expression. You know, he’s not going for lyrical prowess and I love it. It feels like being close to a source, like to a heat source.
