Soft Powder is the solo project of Andy Szetho, a Melbourne-based dream pop producer, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His second EP, Faber Ria is due for release tomorrow and comes hot on the heels of his debut effort Shangri-La, released 12 months ago almost to the day.
Faber Ria is an exploration of identity, family, relationships and growing up as an Asian Australian. The EP is named after an apartment complex in Kuala Lumpur in which his grandparents lived for over 20 years.
“When I started Soft Powder, I wanted this project to reflect my experience growing up in Australia, but with a Cantonese background,” Szetho recently wrote in an Instagram post. He’s done so to great effect by combining eurocentric dream pop influences, motorik drum machine sounds, traditional Chinese instruments, analogue synth and guitar.
