This might not be their weirdest tune, but it’s a two and a half minute prog-pop psychedelic masterpiece about the devil. The chord progression and melodies are spectacular – so dark and mysterious.
The Velvet Underground – Venus in Furs
This song sounds like fall-down drunk. It sounds like when you can’t turn off your brain, like the mental noise of depression/confusion/suffering. It’s a relentless a-melodic dance. We want it to be the background music for all of our upcoming shamanic rituals. It’s also perfect for back porch sitting in the evening sunshine.
Khruangbin – White Gloves
“White Gloves” sounds effortless. Easy. But the production is intentional. The drums are perfect. The bass, the guitar are perfect. The reverb – perfect. The chord progression is sneaky. The vocals are ethereal. It’s both sad and uplifting. It makes Eric cry, but not like a sad memory or an overwhelm – more like sensing the fullness of life. Seeing at once the moment as it relates to all of the past and all of the future.
Tame Impala – It Is Not Meant To Be
We’re back onto the first Tame Impala record. It feels just old enough now to sound fresh again. Now that we can see a bit more clearly Kevin Parker’s musical calculus, this album feels less sprawling and also more groundbreaking than when it came out. “It Is Not Meant To Be” is both laid back and full speed ahead.
